It’s officially one month into the New Year. We’re still trying (and failing) when it comes to writing the correct year. And it’s usually right about now that all of those great New Year’s resolutions begin to fall apart…or never happen at all. On the business side, this means first quarter goals need to stay solid for success. But what if you haven’t quite made them happen yet, especially with social media? Instead of one more article about HOW to achieve your goals, just steer clear of these 3 social media potholes:
I’m going to do this ALL in one day!
Social media is one thing that can’t be “knocked out” in a day. This goes both for tackling all of your account set ups and being “finished” with content. Why? If you created all of your accounts in one day, what kind of strategic roll out would that be? How would you use one to leverage the other? And as for being “finished” with content–that just won’t happen. All of your social media channels need to be consistent, relevant, routinely maintained and served to your audience. (If that sounds like too much, it’s a good indicator to start small with social media.)

Remember that game when you were a kid? The one where an annoying sibling copied everything you said? (Surely it wasn’t you doing the copying!) Well, don’t be that person on social media either. This runs a fine line because good social media recipes include learning from others, whether competitors or brands you love. However, being a straight up copycat is not only bad, it’s a disservice to you, your brand and your audience.

We LOVE a good strategy. BUT not when it’s so complex it means missing the boat because you’re bogged down coming up with nitty-gritty details and then trying to execute them. Now, if you have a robust team to help with execution, then carry on. This tip especially applies to startups and small businesses (you know, where you’re the CEO, IT help desk and accountant all in one day…).
